Notes: 1. The English Level 3 course has been divided into two. These two courses are: ENG3 and ENL3. 2. ENG3 (General) is a more general skills course and includes: delivering a speech, writing a short story, researching a theme and studying a novel and film. Of these, three are internal Achievement Standards and two external. 3. ENL3 (Literature) consists of the study of literary texts: novel, film and through research. These all require skill in writing literary essays, which show an understanding of characters and themes in the text, as well as technical aspects like structure, point of view and production techniques. The course also contains two internal Achievement Standards. With this course most of the work is examined externally at the end of the year. A major focus will be preparation for the Scholarship examination. 4. Students who meet the entrance requirements may take both Level 3 courses but it is not necessary to do so. Although the two courses complement each other and build on the skills of each other they do cover similar aspects of the English curriculum. Students who take both will explore a wider range of literature. 5. Students who complete both Level 3 courses can achieve a maximum of 21 credits as three Achievement Standards (AS90720, AS90721 and AS90723) are repeated across the courses. However, different work will be covered in these three standards in ENG3 and ENL3. 6. If students can choose only one course they are advised to select ENG3, as the Internal Achievement Standards afford reassessment opportunities. This is not possible with external standards. 7. Students aiming to sit Scholarship English must take the ENL3 course.
