Mr Nigel Hanton
Greetings to you all.

I am honoured to be able to write to the school community to thank them for the opportunity of being Principal of Wanganui High School. At the powhiri on 24 March, the school community of Flaxmere College, where I was Principal for five years, handed me over to Wanganui High school in a wonderful, warm ceremony. The strength and vitality of both schools was clearly to be seen, and while they are very different schools, the talents and abilities of their students were obvious. The powhiri was a personal point of closure for me, and I now look forward to committing my professional energy to my new school…our school.

I see my role as maintaining and developing existing good practice in the school…supporting productive school processes that lead to individual students’ learning. Inevitably, this work will identify areas where we can do better, and I believe that this can only lead to further growth and development, and greater student achievement.

My personal thinking in education puts the student firmly in the middle of the decision making process. Taking this into account, I give the commitment that, in all I do, student learning and personal growth will come first as these young people meet the challenge of preparing themselves to make choices that will define their adult life.

With best wishes

Nigel Hanton
