Excerpts from the EDUCATIONAL REVIEW OFFICE REPORT - October 2008
These are the findings of the Education Review Office's latest report on Wanganui High School.
Students at Wanganui High School achieve well in a positive and supportive learning environment. Buildings and grounds are well maintained and property developments since the October 2005 report include a new gymnasium complex. Trustees also resource significant staff professional development initiatives. Staff and board members are clearly focused on developing school facilities and the quality of teaching to maximise learners’ opportunities and achievement.
This review evaluates the impact of teacher professional learning and development (PLD) on student achievement, the achievement of Māori and Pacific students and the provision for International students. The report also investigates preparedness to implement the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) in 2010, thinking about the future and aspects of student safety.
Ongoing staff development is fostered in the improvement-focused environment that exists throughout the school. In setting PLD priorities, senior managers appropriately base decision making on self review and effective-practice research evidence. Initiatives are well linked to school and departmental goals. Students benefit from the collaborative culture of continual improvement that exists throughout the school
Schoolwide PLD initiatives focus on teaching strategies and classroom relationships that effectively engage students. Learners are often involved in stimulating, active learning processes. They respond well to the enthusiastic and encouraging approach shown by teachers. Students affirm that the focus on strong relationships and active learning increases their interest and engagement. A purposeful, supportive learning environment is prevalent throughout the school.
The percentage of students who achieve National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) at all levels is higher than comparable schools. In 2007, 87% of Year 11 students achieved a level one certificate, 79.8% of Year 12 a level 2 certificate, and 67.5% of Year 13 achieved at level 3. Attainment of NCEA level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements exceeds decile and national averages. Student retention and achievement of University Entrance (UE) levels also exceed national comparisons
Trustees demonstrate confidence in the educational leadership of the principal and the senior administration team. The board and senior managers have a united approach in their desire to provide an exceptional learning environment. Their robust self-review practices ensure programme effectiveness is well monitored and areas for development are identified. Improving the links between staff development activities and the expected outcomes for students should further support review of the impact of teacher PLD on teaching and learning.
